  1. I found the article very interesting because of how she managed to get on the ship that went around the world. She was a women acting and dressing like a man. Back then that was unheard of. But the crew was ok with her being a part of the crew and they excepted it. I found that part of the article the most interesting.

  2. This Biography about Jeanne Baret, i found very amusing to read. Not only was Jeanne the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, but she also shared a very close bond with nature. This whole topic is an overall very facinating task she was able to carry out.Being the first woman to manage this navigation was quite an achievement for her; and she is still recognized today for her couageous journeys across the merky seas.

  3. I thought the biography was interesting because not many people have gone against what is accepted socially, especially women. Jeanne Baret did not like the life she had and was able to move around in French classes, a feat almost unheard of. She also was able to be the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, while she dressed as a man. It is great to see women beginning to challenge social fabric and changing history.

  4. After losing her son, Jeanne Baret had to get away from the life she was creating, so she and her lover decided to dress her up as a man so she could act as the naturalist’s assistant aboard the ship because she already had experience in that field. Commerson and Baret sailed around the world together aboard a ship. Other crew men became very suspicious of Jeanne's gender very quickly because she didn't participate in manly things, like peeing off of the front deck into the ocean. This article was very interesting because it describes all of the interesting things Jeane had to do to convince the crew she was a man. In doing so she made history by becoming the first woman to ever circumnavigate the globe.

  5. I think its interesting how Jeanne dressed as a man and also how she went on a boat around the world. I think its amazing how she contradicted society's opinion about men being the dominating gender. Being the first woman to navigate around the world gave women a higher title. I think she is an extremely strong woman for leaving her son.

  6. This article was fascinating to read because it shows how throughout history how womens rights have changed. Jeanne paved the way for many and showed how strongly women felt on this subject, in order to dress like a man and going on a dangerous journey to prove what women are truly capable of you must really want your own rights. Her being the first women to circumnavigate the globe was a huge accomplishment that many poeple didn't get to recognize at the time. Although she's a little odd she still took part in a great time in history.

  7. After delivering two children that she soon gave up, Jeanne and her lover escaped to a new life on a ship. Her lover was recruited to be the ships naturalist, therefore she became his assistant. This task also required her to disguise her gender and dress like a man. Suspicions arose about her sex and she was found out. This article is unique because most women would not have the courage to circumnavigate the globe with a ship full of men and be apart of the dangers involved in that.

  8. Jeanne was one woman who had a very driven mentality. If she had a goal, she would go out and achieve it. Not only did she deliver two children and have to give them up, which an is unbelievably hard thing to do in the first place, but she also proved to her society that a woman is capable of doing a mans job. When Commerson was unable to go around and collect plant samples, it was up to Jeanne to do all of the physical work. Circumnavigating the globe made all of those men who were doubtful of women's capabilities, sit back down in their chair. She was a very driven woman that was willing to do anything for what she was passionate about.

  9. I found this article to be very interesting. This woman was willing to endure the pains of a man and do all of it out of love. In this time period the women were to stay home and build a family. This included taking care of the home and making sure that her man was happy. The fact that she dressed as a man and left her inevitable fate behind was remarkable. Even better is the fact the she is the first woman to circumnavigate the world. This is an amazing story that exudes perseverance and should be an inspiration for people to do what they want.

  10. The article "JEANNE BARET (1740 – 1807) First Woman to Circumnavigate the Globe" was fascinating to read about. Due to Jeanne's love of plants, she was able to go on worldly, and sometimes challenging adventures. I found her curiosity and desire to discover and learn more, very interesting to hear. She took bad or difficult situations, and found the positive in them, or made it into an opportunity to broaden her horizons. She was an admirable person and went against what was accepted socially at that time. I thought it was interesting how she receive recognition for her contribution to society as a naturalist, but was not recognized when she returned home, becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.

  11. The first woman to go all the way around the world was born in France in 1740, in the Loire Valley. Her family taught her to identify plants to treat wounds and diseases and so she became "an herb woman," a peasant schooled in botanical medicine. In this she was not unusual. People didn't have to read or write to "botanize." Most of the learning was passed down orally. Jeanne Baret was, apparently, very good at it, and she was also very lucky. I found this article very interesting and thought it was very interesting how she was able to circumnavigate the globe as a man.

  12. I think that it is interesting that Jeanne Baret was a herb woman in her early years. I liked that she went to the trouble of pretending to be a man in order to do what she loved. I like that Commerson allowed Jeanne to accompany him on his travels. It was cool that she was able to treat Commerson's gangrene with the skills that she had grown up knowing. Its funny that nobody was really able to point out that Jeanne was a woman until the native pointed it out. This is an amazing story about a woman following her dreams no matter what society had to say at the time.

  13. This biography about Jeanne Baret, I found to be extremely interesting. Jeanne was born in France around 1740, in Loire Valley. Throughout her childhood her family taught her the different plant types that would later on help her to treat wounds and diseases. Because of the information taught as a child, she became known later as the "herb woman" training at a peasant school. I found this article very amusing because not only was she able to break history being the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, but also grew a strong association with nature itself. By the description of this article, you can tell Jeanne is one who is very courageous and extremely bright. She was successful and believed in herself in which all of us should do in order to reach success.

  14. I thought that Jeanne Baret's life was fascinating. When Baret dressed as a man and changed her name it was very dangerous and risky for her and Commerson. Women were not supposed to be on French boats during this time period but Baret stood against it and as a result, she was raped. It was quite a coincidence when she learned to take care of medical issues and plants when she was younger and Commerson need medical attention and Baret became a botanist with Commerson. She didn't mean to circumnavigate the globe, it just happened to her because she went on a voyage with Commerson. I thought it was odd how the native they picked up from Tahiti noticed that she was a woman instantly.

During her childhood she new many different plant types, so when she grew up there was no doubt that she know how to treat many diseases. 16. Jeanne Baret is a very strong women to be honest. Back then i don't think anyone would have been brave enough to dress up like a man and go on a trip like that. No women were allowed on french boats back then. Sadly, people were suspicious about her gender, so they took away her gun and raped her. When her and her husband were going home, they had there baby boy. They needed to find a new home and eventually they succeeded.

  18. I found this very interesting and impressive. For a women at that time to do this is unheard of because they weren't aloud on ships at that time. She had to dress up like a man to be able to sail around the world. She also had a great connection with nature as well which makes her a great person. It was a great article.

  20. I found this article very interesting and sad. I thought she was a very bad mother because she gave away two of her kids without any emotion or sign of sympathy for the kids. I thought it was interesting when she dressed up as a man and picked plants. It was cool how she was the first women to circumnavigate the earth, although she didnt get credit.

  21. I thought that this article was very interesting. I thought it was cruel how she threw two of her babies away. Her voyage was hard but she was able to gather new plants for the French empire. Her hardships were torturous, for example she was almost raped on the ship. Overall she had a hard life but it was worth it because she was the first women to circumnavigate the earth, although she was not given the credit she rightfully deserved.

  22. I found the article on Jeanne Baret both interesting and strange. Her life is evidence to the fact that even the people who do great things have their flaws. In her case, she wasn't the best mother. But her odyssey across the world and the hardships she was met with shows her inner strength and her want for adventure.

  23. I thought this article was amazing. Its fascinating how a simple girl who was not destined to wander more than 20 miles from her hometown, navigated the globe! Its amazing how she was able to conceal her identity for so long. Its a shame she could never settle down and have the calm life many ant when growing older. Its also a shame that her useless shipmates were granted more recognition than her.
